Ursula - Irish Name - Fine Art Print

... from the Latin ursula, 'little she-bear' - the diminutive of ursa, a name given in the old way of naming children for the strong creatures whose courage they might share. The legend tells of Ursula, a Romano-British princess martyred at Cologne with her companions, whose story so moved medieval Europe that a whole order of teaching sisters took her name - and it was those Ursulines who carried it to Ireland: in 1771, at Nano Nagle's invitation, they opened the first Ursuline convent in the country, in Cork, and they have been educating Irish daughters ever since. And the name can still swing a camán: Ursula Jacob of Oulart-the-Ballagh won four All-Ireland titles with Wexford. The full story of Ursula - its meaning, history, and place in Ireland - is set down in the print.
