    Book of Names

What is the Book of Names?

The Book of Names is Mayo Calligraphy's fully personalised Celtic name service. Unlike the ready-made Irish Name Vault, each Book of Names piece is hand-researched and created for a specific person - incorporating their name, its ancient Irish meaning and history, and personal details you provide: where they are from, siblings, who they are named for, and anything else that makes the piece uniquely theirs.

Available as a digital download, or hand-lettered in the Celtic uncial tradition on genuine goatskin parchment.

How much does the Book of Names cost?

    • Digital download - €35. A personalised print-ready JPEG, delivered by email.
    • Hand-lettered on genuine goatskin parchment - €450. An original work of art, lettered with Celtic knotwork on genuine goatskin parchment, mounted and framed. A true heirloom.

See the full pricing page →

How does the Book of Names ordering process work?

After you place your order, Maggi sends a short email asking for a few personal details - the child's name, where they are from, siblings, who they are named for, and anything else you would like included. Maggi then researches the name and crafts a bespoke lyrical description in the Celtic tradition.

A draft preview is sent to you for approval before any final work begins. Revisions are unlimited - the piece is not finalised until you are completely happy with it.

How long does a Book of Names order take?

    • Digital download: draft sent within 3-5 working days of receiving your details. Final file available for instant download the moment you approve it.
    • Goatskin parchment: allow 4-6 weeks from approval for lettering and mounting. Dispatched by tracked and insured courier (An Post). Note: goatskin parchment supply can occasionally cause delays - contact Maggi if you have a specific date in mind.
    Bespoke Commissions

What kinds of bespoke commissions does Mayo Calligraphy create?

Mayo Calligraphy takes on a wide range of original calligraphy commissions, including:

    • Memorial poems and tributes - lines and lyrics for those we love
    • Family trees, coats of arms and heritage pieces
    • Civic scrolls, freedom certificates and civic honours
    • Wedding stationery - invitations, envelopes, table plans, place cards, mass booklets, vow keepsakes, custom monograms
    • Corporate and institutional presentations
    • Original framed pieces on goatskin parchment

If you have something in mind that does not fit a standard product, contact Maggi to discuss it - even a rough idea is enough to start.

    What does bespoke calligraphy cost?

Hand-lettered calligraphy (dip pen and ink, entirely by hand):

    • General calligraphy: €1.75 per word - includes all design, re-draws and embellishments. For larger commissions over 500 words, this per word price may decrease
    • Envelope and address lettering: €2.00 per name/address

Computer-assisted calligraphy (specialist calligraphy fonts, ideal for longer pieces or larger runs):

    • General calligraphy: €0.40 per word
    • With metallic or glitter finish: €1.00 per word
    • Envelope and address lettering: €0.70 per name/address
    • With metallic finish: €1.00 per name/address

Goatskin parchment: an additional charge of €150 per sheet applies when the piece is worked on genuine goatskin vellum. Please allow 4-6 weeks from design approval, as parchment supply can be variable.

A minimum fee of €20 applies to all orders. Full payment is due on completion and before delivery. A free, no-obligation consultation is always included.

What is the difference between hand-lettered and computer-assisted calligraphy?

Hand-lettered calligraphy is created entirely by hand using a dip pen and ink. Each letter is unique, with the natural variation and warmth of the human hand - the traditional art form, and the one that Mayo Calligraphy is built on. It is the right choice for pieces where the handmade quality is part of what you are commissioning.

Computer-assisted calligraphy uses specialist calligraphy fonts and design software to produce clean, consistent lettering. It is more affordable and faster to produce, making it well suited to longer pieces, large envelope runs, or projects where uniformity matters. Both produce beautiful results. A free consultation will help clarify which is best for your project.

    What is goatskin parchment?

Goatskin parchment is a natural animal skin material used for important documents and manuscripts for centuries - the same material used by the great scribes of medieval Ireland. It is extraordinarily durable (pieces on parchment can last hundreds of years) and the surface produces a quality of lettering that no paper can match.

Parchment can be requested for bespoke commissions at an additional charge of €150 per sheet. It is also the material used for the Book of Names goatskin parchment option (€450 framed). Please allow 4-6 weeks from design approval, as supply can be variable.

How far in advance should I book for a wedding?

For full wedding stationery, 6-8 months before your wedding date is recommended. For envelope or invitation addressing runs, 4-6 weeks is ideal. If your date is closer, always ask - every effort will be made to help.

    About Mayo Calligraphy

    Who is behind Mayo Calligraphy?

Mayo Calligraphy was founded by Maggi Geraghty and is based in Ballintubber, Co. Mayo, Ireland. Maggi graduated with a BA in Art and Design from GMIT and has been running the business since 2011. She is the official calligrapher to Ashford Castle and The Lodge at Ashford for over 15 years, and has worked with county councils, universities, GAA clubs, community organisations, the Ireland and British Micro Business Awards, and the Bumbleance Children's Ambulance Service. She is a member of the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland and also a member of CLAS - the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society.

    Where is Mayo Calligraphy based?

Mayo Calligraphy is based in Ballintubber, Co. Mayo, in the west of Ireland. All work is created by Maggi Geraghty in Co. Mayo. Digital downloads are available worldwide and delivered instantly. Physical pieces are shipped within Ireland and to selected international destinations - see the ordering section below for international delivery information.

    Why does handmade calligraphy matter?

Photographs fade. Awards mean nothing to someone three generations down who does not know the names. Mayo Calligraphy exists to put names to faces, dates on occasions and words to feelings - so that those who come after will know something of how we lived and who we loved. On the right material, a piece of calligraphy can last centuries. That is what drives everything made here.

    Ordering & Delivery

How do I place an order?

For the Irish Name Vault and Book of Names, order directly through the website - Vault of Irish Names or Book of Names.

For bespoke commissions, call or WhatsApp Maggi on +353 86 171 8330, or email studio@mayocalligraphy.com. Even a rough idea is enough to start - a free, no-obligation consultation is always included.

    Do you ship internationally?

Digital downloads are available worldwide - instantly, with no postage involved. If you are in the US, Australia, Canada or anywhere else in the world, a digital download from the Irish Name Vault or Book of Names is the simplest and fastest option.

Physical pieces within Ireland are posted by An Post with tracking. For international shipping of physical pieces, please get in touch before ordering - +353 86 171 8330 or studio@mayocalligraphy.com. International postage is currently complicated: USPS is experiencing significant delays, and customers importing to the US should be aware of import tariffs and VAT charges that may apply on delivery. Tariffs and VAT may also apply to exports to UK and other countries outside of the EU. A courier service is often the more reliable option for valuable pieces, though it adds to the overall cost. Maggi will advise on the best route for your specific destination before you commit to an order.

What is the returns and refund policy?

As all Book of Names and commission pieces are personalised to order, they are non-refundable once the work has been approved and created. You will be asked to sign / email a print approval form which confirms that you are happy to proceed with the project based on the final draft. If a physical piece arrives damaged, please contact Maggi within 48 hours with a photograph and a replacement will be arranged. Digital downloads are non-refundable due to their instant delivery nature. EU customers retain a 14-day cooling-off right on non-personalised purchases. Full details are in the Refund Policy.
