... from the old French city of Troyes in Champagne, whose name travelled as a surname with those who left it - and behind it, always, the older echo: Troia, Homer's city of the long siege, the most storied walls in literature. But Troy has an Irish road of its own: the Gaelic surname Ó Troighthigh - descendant of the foot-soldier - was anglicised as Troy, and the Troys have been settled in Tipperary, Limerick and Cork for centuries, soldiers' stock under a marching name. It was a Dubliner who wrote the name's newest chapter: in November 2025 Troy Parrott struck a hat-trick against Hungary - the winner arriving in the 96th minute - to send the Republic of Ireland into the World Cup play-offs, the first competitive hat-trick for the men's team since Robbie Keane.
