Risteard - Irish Name - Fine Art Print

The meaning of Risteard

Risteard - the Irish form of Richard, from the Germanic ric, the ruler, and hard, brave - the brave ruler - brought by the Normans and grafted so deep into Connacht that it grew legends of its own. The greatest of them stands on the shore of Clew Bay: Risteard an Iarainn Bourke - Richard in Iron, named for the iron ore of his lands - chieftain of Burrishoole in Mayo, who in the 1560s married Gráinne Mhaol, Grace O'Malley, the pirate queen herself.

The rest of Risteard's story is set down in the print.
