Ricard - a form of Riocard, the Irish shape of Richard - from the Germanic ric, the ruler, and hard, brave - a Norman name that came with the invasion and stayed long enough to learn the language. Mayo gave it its finest bearer: Riocard Bairéad of Erris, born near Belmullet around 1740, the poet whose mock lament Eoghan Cóir - for a bailiff nobody mourned - and whose drinking song Preab san Ól are still sung, two centuries on, wherever Irish songs are sung at all. He farmed five acres beside the Atlantic and was master of the whole language - which is the name's own kind of wealth.
