Redmond - the anglicised shape of Réamonn, the Irish form of Raymond - from the Germanic ragin and munt, counsel and protection - a name so long at home in Ireland that it reads as native ground. Count Redmond O'Hanlon made it legend: the seventeenth-century outlaw of Armagh, Tyrone and Down, compared in his own lifetime to Robin Hood, dead by treachery in 1681 and alive in folklore ever since. Thackeray reached for the same name when he needed a charming Irish rogue, and Redmond Barry duly swaggered out of The Luck of Barry Lyndon in 1844 and on into Kubrick's Barry Lyndon on film. In our own day Redmond O'Hanlon the travel writer has hauled the name through the jungles of Borneo and the Amazon in books of scholarly, cheerful recklessness.
