Réamonn - the Irish form of Raymond, from the Germanic ragin and munt - counsel and protection - carried into Ireland by the Normans and reshaped until it sounded like the country it had settled in. Its greatest bearer ran the hills of Ulster: Réamonn Ó hAnluain - Count Redmond O'Hanlon - the seventeenth-century tóraí who ran his own law across Armagh, Tyrone and Down, was compared to Robin Hood in his own lifetime, and was brought down at last not by soldiers but by treachery, in 1681. And the name still travels: Rea Garvey of Tralee, christened Raymond, named his band Reamonn for the Irish form of his own name and sang Supergirl into the charts across Europe in 2000.
