... from the Old Irish caomh, meaning dear, beloved, gentle - by way of Caoimhe, one of the best-loved girls' names in Ireland, set down here in a spelling every eye can read at first glance. Beneath the travelling spelling the meaning remains unchanged, and it keeps high company - the same root gave Ireland Caoimhín, Kevin of Glendalough, the sixth-century saint who began as a hermit in the valley of the two lakes in Wicklow and drew a whole monastic city around his gentleness. Ireland has always named its daughters this way, blessing the child with the quality itself: not a hope that she will be precious, but a statement that she already is. The full story of Kiva - its meaning, history, and place in Ireland - is set down in the print.
