Joseph - from the Hebrew Yosef, meaning he will add - a promise of increase given to the eleventh son of Jacob, the dreamer sold into Egypt by his brothers, who rose to the pharaoh's right hand and, when famine came, fed the very men who had wronged him. That is the deep pattern of the name: the one who turns injury into provision. Ireland's Josephs kept faith with it. Joseph Mary Plunkett, poet of I See His Blood upon the Rose, signed the Proclamation in 1916 and married Grace Gifford in the chapel at Kilmainham only hours before his execution - a wedding and a farewell in one night.
