Francis - Irish Name - Fine Art Print

Francis - from the Latin Franciscus, the Frenchman - a nickname before it was ever a name. It was given to a merchant's son of Assisi, baptised Giovanni, whose delight in all things French earned him Francesco - and when that young man gave away his inheritance to walk with the poor, the nickname became one of the great names of the world. His grey friars reached Ireland within a few years of his death, and the Irish have held the name close ever since. It belongs above all to Francis Ledwidge, the poet of the blackbirds, born at Slane in the Boyne Valley, who set the hedgerows and birdsong of Meath into verse and was killed at Ypres on the last day of July 1917.
