... the Irish form of Elizabeth, from the Hebrew Elisheva, meaning my God is an oath - and written here as the Gaeltacht writes it, both fadas flying over the letters like accents of light. This is the name fully at home in its own language, the spelling a child learns at an Irish school desk, every stroke of it deliberate. It keeps the best of literary company: Éilís Ní Dhuibhne, who writes in Irish and in English both, was named Ireland's Laureate for Irish Fiction in 2025, carrying the name to the very front rank of Irish letters. An oath, after all, is only words until somebody keeps it - and the fadas are the name's own way of keeping every one. The full story of Éilís - its meaning, history, and place in Ireland - is set down in the print.
