Derval - Irish Name - Fine Art Print

... from the Old Irish Derbáil, worn smooth by a thousand years of use into Derval - a form that travels anywhere and loses nothing, for the old name-books read the original as daughter of Fál, and Fál is an ancient poetic name for Ireland herself, the Inis Fáil of the poets, named for the Stone of Destiny at Tara. Daughter of Ireland, then, in six plain letters, and a favourite of the medieval Gaelic families long before it learned English. No one has carried it at greater speed than Derval O'Rourke of Cork, who took gold in the 60 metres hurdles at the 2006 World Indoor Championships in Moscow - the first Irish woman ever to win a world indoor athletics title - and stood on European podiums for years after. The full story of Derval - its meaning, history, and place in Ireland - is set down in the print.
