★★★★★ Read what our customers say... from the Old Irish der and file - daughter of the poet - a name born into the one aristocracy Ireland never dissolved, for the fili stood beside kings and their word outlasted them. And this name belongs to Mayo above all: Deirbhile of Erris, the sixth-century saint, fled west to the Mullet Peninsula to escape a suitor, and when he told her it was her eyes that drew him, she plucked them out - then washed her face in the water of a spring by the shore, and her sight, the legend says, came back to her. Her church still stands at Fallmore near An Fód Dubh - Blacksod - at the peninsula's end, her holy well beside it, its water sought for the eyes to this day, and every August the pattern day still walks the old ground in her name. The full story of Deirbhile - its meaning, history, and place in Ireland - is set down in the print.
