Dearbháil - Irish Name - Fine Art Print

... from the Old Irish Derbáil, which the old name-books read as daughter of Fál - and Fál is one of the oldest poetic names for Ireland herself: the poets called this island Inis Fáil after the Lia Fáil, the Stone of Destiny on the Hill of Tara, said to cry out beneath the feet of the rightful king. To be Dearbháil, then, is to be nothing less than a daughter of Ireland, and medieval Ireland understood the size of the compliment - the name was a favourite among the noblewomen of the great Gaelic families for centuries, set down again and again by the scribes. It has softened in modern mouths to Derval and Dervla, but the old form keeps the fada and the full claim. The full story of Dearbháil - its meaning, history, and place in Ireland - is set down in the print.
