Conall Cernach, the Victorious, was among the mightiest heroes of the Ulster Cycle - he and Cú Chulainn had sworn that whichever of them fell first, the other would avenge him before nightfall, and when the day came, Conall kept his word. And Conall Gulban, son of Niall of the Nine Hostages, took the north-west for his own in the fifth century and left his name on the land itself: Tír Chonaill, the land of Conall, which is Donegal to this day. Few names can claim a county. And the wolf in the name is no snarling thing - a wolf is strong for its pack, tireless for its own, loyal past the end of the road.
