Caroline - Irish Name - Fine Art Print

... the feminine of Charles, from the Germanic karl, a plain old word for a man - a word that rose so high with the emperor Charlemagne that in half the languages of Europe it simply came to mean king. Caroline is that crown worn at a queen's angle, and its bearers have a habit of taking charge of things. Caroline Herschel swept the night skies of the eighteenth century, found eight comets doing it, and in 1828 became the first woman ever awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society. And the name owns a fine piece of Irish mischief: Radio Caroline, the pirate station that beamed rock and roll from a ship in open water from 1964, was the work of a Dubliner, Ronan O'Rahilly, grandson of The O'Rahilly of the 1916 Rising - rebellion, it seems, travels in the family and in the name. The full story of Caroline - its meaning, history, and place in Ireland - is set down in the print.
