The meaning of Arthur

Arthur - from the old Celtic artos, 'bear' - or so the strongest reading runs, though some scholars reach instead for the Roman family name Artorius, and the truth is older than the records. What is not disputed is the size of the name. Arthur is the once and future king, the bear of Britain who held the line against the dark, a legend so large that every language in Europe borrowed him. But Ireland never needed the loan, for the Irish had the same word already: art, bear, a champion's name in its own right, worn by Art mac Cuinn, High King of Ireland and son of Conn of the Hundred Battles, hero of the old sagas.
