The meaning of Aoibh
Aoibh - from the Irish aoibh, 'beauty, a smile, a pleasant expression' - one of the shortest names in the Irish tradition, and one of the oldest feelings in it. The dictionaries give it plainly: bhí aoibh an gháire air, he was beaming. But the name reaches back further, into Ireland's most sorrowful and beloved story, for Aoibh was the first wife of Lir, daughter of Bodb Derg, king of the Tuatha Dé Danann, and mother of the four children the world remembers as the Children of Lir - Fionnghuala, Aodh, Fiachra and Conn.
The rest of Aoibh's story is set down in the print.
