sally-celtic-name-print-fine-art-print
Sally - Irish Name - Fine Art Print

... from the Hebrew Sarah, meaning princess - but Sally arrived by a side door, the way children reshape their parents' language. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, English-speaking children softened Sarah to Sally by the simple act of swapping the r for an l, and the pet name took root and became its own. In Ireland, Sally was the form that stuck - in kitchens and fields and church registers and the names called across the yard at suppertime. It carried no weight of formality, no distance between the name and the woman. And yet behind it sits Sarah, meaning princess, meaning lady, meaning the one from whom nations descend. In modern times Sally Field, the two-time Academy Award winner, played the grounded counterpoint to Robin Williams in Mrs Doubtfire. The full story of Sally - its meaning, history, and place in Ireland - is set down in the print.

This print
Created in the Celtic uncial script tradition, with original Celtic knotwork ornament designed by Maggi Geraghty.
