riocard-celtic-name-print-fine-art-print
Riocard - Irish Name - Fine Art Print

Riocard - the Irish form of Richard, from the Germanic ric, the ruler, and hard, brave - a Norman name the Irish language took in and made entirely its own, fada and all. And no one wore the Irish form better than Riocard Bairéad, the poet of Erris in Mayo, born near Belmullet around 1740, who lived on a five-acre farm at the edge of the Atlantic and left songs that outlasted every landlord in the barony: Eoghan Cóir, the mock lament that buried a bailiff in laughter, and Preab san Ól, the drinking song whose merry philosophy is still raised wherever Irish is sung. The English record knew him as Richard Barrett; Erris knew him as Riocard, and Erris was right. The full story of Riocard - its meaning, history, and place in Ireland - is set down in the print.

This print
Created in the Celtic uncial script tradition, with original Celtic knotwork ornament designed by Maggi Geraghty.
