eibhlin-celtic-name-print-fine-art-print
Eibhlín - Irish Name - Fine Art Print

... from the Norman French Aveline, a name that came to Ireland with the Normans in the twelfth century and was taken so warmly into the Irish language that it became one of its best-loved women's names - the old name-books trace it back to a Germanic root read as desired: the longed-for child. Ireland gave it its definitive shape, Eibhlín, and then gave it a legend: the seventeenth-century poet and harper Cearbhall Óg Ó Dálaigh walked into a wedding feast in Wexford, sang for the bride a song of his own making, and she left her own wedding to go with him - a song the English-speaking world learned as Eileen Aroon, which is simply the old endearment this name was always sung with: a rún, my secret love, my treasure. From Eibhlín English took both Eileen and Evelyn, but the fada holds the original note. The full story of Eibhlín - its meaning, history, and place in Ireland - is set down in the print.

This print
Created in the Celtic uncial script tradition, with original Celtic knotwork ornament designed by Maggi Geraghty.
